Why do we have a quarterly weather question?

I am a meteorologist in my primary job and have been since graduating from Texas A&M in
1994.  I have a master's degree in atmospheric dynamics and am currently working on a
doctorate degree in numerical weather prediction.  As such, I am equally enthusiastic about
weather phenomena (especially of severe nature) as I am about creating unique items using
wood which reveals nature's beauty.  This is my way of increasing your knowledge about
weather by rewarding you with a free pen.
How does the contest work?

I will ask a new weather question on a quarterly basis with a selected pen as the prize.  You
must enter your name, email address, phone number (optional) and the correct answer (or "No
answer") in the web form, and submit it prior to the contest end date.  The winner will be
randomly selected from the list of contestants who answered the weather question correctly.
If
no one answered the question correctly, a winner will be selected from all names entered into
the contest, irregardless of whether the question was answered.
If you are the selected winner,
I will contact you by email or phone to get your mailing information and the selected pen will be
shipped to you free of charge.  The winners first name and city along with the answer to the
weather question will be added to the "Answers" pages of our site.  To get started, select
"Current Question" from the navigation bar to the left.  (Note: there is no purchase obligation to
be eligible for this contest.)
Eligibility restrictions

Individuals who have won a pen in the previous 24 months (along with members of their
household) are not eligible for the current quarterly contest.  In addition, employees of Stenger
Woodworking and their family members are not eligible to participate in the contest.
